Simply Sitting: #mostlymindful10 Week 1

Last week I committed to at least 10 minutes of meditation per day for the next year and to sharing that journey with you.

Hooray for accountability! Had I not made that promise, I would’ve fallen off the wagon on day 3. But I persevered, and the habit of sitting each day is already forming. I’m already feeling less resistance to the act of slowing down for 10 minutes, and I’ve already had some insights along the way.

If you’ve never meditated before, don’t worry. This week our intention is simply to notice what’s going on in our bodies, hearts, and minds. Here’s a step-by-step guide to “simply sitting”:

  • Find a relatively quiet place to sit for at least 10 minutes. I use the free Meditation Helper app to time my sittings because I can set reusable profiles that give me time to settle in before the beginning bell tone rings.
  • Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
  • Notice any sounds or sensations in your environment.
  • Notice any sensations in your physical body.
  • Notice any emotions you are experiencing, or that arise while you sit.
  • Notice your thoughts.
  • It’s important to focus on noticing, without having an internal dialogue about what you’re noticing in the moment. Simply sit, and become aware of what’s going on.

Disclaimer: Although I’m referring to this technique as “simply sitting”, it is not simple! It takes practice. You will have thoughts that have nothing to do with noticing your experience. On some days, you will experience resistance, if not downright loathing, of this practice. Do it anyway. I guarantee results will follow.

So where did I sit this week?

My Back Deck

9/18/15 & 9/19/15: Days 7 & 8 of #mostlymindful10. Welcome to my deck during the daytime! I forgot to take a pic yesterday, but I lucked out that I did my #meditation in the same spot at roughly the same time (early afternoon) both days. Both sittings were equally rough ad far as continuously pulling my mind away from thoughts of my to do list. Both afternoons brought a breeze that I appreciated. I did notice less reluctance to doing the sitting, which tells me a habit is reforming. Want to join me? Outside My Office Building

9/17/2015: Day 6 of #mostlymindful10. I stopped to sit in the grass right outside my office building, knowing I'd find an excuse not to meditate after arriving home to watch the #broncos game. It was the first time in a long time I'd done a meditation outside and I marveled at how grounded I felt by.. literally sitting on the ground. I noticed the wind and the sounds of people walking by. The voices tempted me to open my eyes, which I did maybe twice. The parking lot is being resurfaced and I noticed the strong, plasticy odor that added to the cool breeze. I noticed how soft the grass was, and I felt peaceful. The #10minutes flew by. #simplysitting #justnotice #meditation #mindfulness #mommytime #outdoors #picoftheday

I really really need to start doing some of this! It is far too easy to let life’s hustle & bustle overwhelm you. I will follow your Instagram & blog for inspiration. :)

My life is very busy so think this would help me.  I might have to beat the kids out of bed to manage to get the quiet
